Mangalore, Feb 11, 2014 : State Minister for Forest and DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai has directed the officials to send a proposal to the government to upgrade Wenlock Hospital into a Regional Government Hospital.
The Minister who chaired the Arogya Raksha Samithi meeting of the Hospital on February 10, Monday said so when District Surgeon Dr Rajeshwari Devi said the hospital faced problems in dealing with increasing number of patients from as many as ten districts including DK and Udupi, owing to its limited resources and shortage of staff.
The District Surgeon also informed that a blue print for the construction of a new jail ward in the hospital is under preparation as directed by the DC in the previous meeting. The task will be entrusted to the Housing Board, she said adding the present jail ward in the hospital is as old as 85 years.
She said nearly 30 orphans who were admitted to hospital and have been cured of their ailments are still in the hospital as they have none to take care of them. This has been a burden on the hospital, she said.
She also gave information about the various works under progress in the hospital. She further urged the government to increase the capacity of the mortuary in the hospital as the number of unclaimed bodies which are recovered is rising. The audit report for 2011-12 and 2012-13 were presented by Mahabaleshwar Bhat, CA.
