One-day assessment camp for people with disabilities will be held on Jan 24: DC

Mangalore, Jan 22, 2014: The southern regional centre of Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India) will organize a one-day comprehensive assessment camp for aides and appliances for the persons with disabilities at the artificial limb centre of District Wenlock Hospital on January 24, Friday said DC A.B.Ibrahim.

Speaking a press conference on Jan 22, Wednesday, he said that after the assessment of their disabilities at the camp, the aids and equipment worth Rs 15 lakh will be distributed to beneficiaries through their respective gram panchayats within two months.


Gertrude Veigas, DK Deputy Director of Women and Child Development said that through the camp, the beneficiaries will be distributed with artificial limbs, wheelchairs, tricycles, hearing aids, Braille slates, calipers for polio-afflicted patients, artificial knee joints and assistive canes for the blind or partially blind.


She also said that the beneficiaries who have received the equipment will also be re-equipped after their assessment at the camp. Around 200 beneficiaries are expected to participate in the camp.


Veigas said that a team of 12 officers from New Delhi, Secunderabad and Chennai will arrive district to carry out the assessment work at the camp.


Endosulfan victims


DC A.B.Ibrahim said that various concerned authorities have decided to implement welfare schemes for the Endosulfan victims and the victims will be issue with Identity cards from January 25 at the first phase. The identity cards for the victims will be issued in Kokkada centre on January 25.


DC also said that Government has already sanctioned a sum of Rs 1.78 crores for the victims to be disbursed as compensation. Further the district administration will give the monthly pension of Rs. 3,000 for victims with 75 per cent-100 per cent disability, while victims with 50 per cent disability will be disbursed with Rs. 2,000 from the month of January 25. 


The district administration has also decided to ensure functioning of mobile unit during specific date, time and place and the families of victims will also informed about the matter, he said.


He also said that no survey will be conducted to list out the name of victims, but the names of victims left out in previous survey will be included on informing, he added.
