Giving details about the development of the project, District Project Director Takath Rao said that for four Town Municipal Councils and three Town Panchayats Rs 35 crore has been released under the scheme (Rs 5 crore for each), in which 80 per cent of the funds are earmarked for road development and 20 per cent will be spent for drain works. The implementation and maintenance is done by a firm called Nikethan consultants of Bangalore.

According to the information provided by Nikethan consultants upto May 31, a total amount of Rs 20.47 crore has been released by the government and Rs 16.64 crore has been spent for various works in the district. It means Rs 3.82 crore is the balance. In ULB wise expenditure, Bantwal Town Municipal Council has spent Rs 2.97 crore, Belthangady Town Panchayat has spent Rs 2.60 crore, Moodbidri TMC has spent Rs 3.61 crore and Mulki TP has spent Rs 4.33 crore which is considered as best among all. Ullal TMC has spent Rs 2.45 crore. At the bottom, Puttur TMC has spent Rs 44.05 lakh and Sullia TP has spent Rs 22.49 lakh.

The DC was disappointed as only Rs 44 lakh was spent out of Rs 5 crore by Puttur TMC and ordered to speed up the land acquisition work needed for road development. He also directed Assistant Commissioner to convene a meeting at Puttur to solve the legal hurdles regarding the process. “All 27 works should be started within aweek and engineers should take responsibility of quality of work,” he said. Nikethan consultant representative Manjunath complained that payment is not done for them though last date is over.

Sump cleaning : The DC once again reminded the officials to check the ground-level or underground water tanks of hotels, offices, lodges, hostels or anywhere which are meant for public use should be checked. He also gave one month time limit to finish the work.

Parks and burial grounds : A B Ibrahim asked the Town Municipal Councils and Town Panchayat members about the available parks and burial grounds in their municipality limits. When many officials didn’t have the exact figure, he suggested  prepare all such information. If they belonged to different community, boards should be put up, he said. The DC stressed that the government land should not be encroached. If there is any plan of utilising the barren land for garden, park or any public purpose, a proposal should be sent to the administration, he said.

The DC expressed concern about the incomplete UGD problem of Sullia, which is worth Rs 3 crore. “There should be some developments in the work by next week, when I visit there.” he warned. Nowhere else the UGD project faced hurdles of this kind, it was a wonder, the DC observed.

Ullala Ashraya houses : Speaking about 390 houses built under Ashraya scheme at Ullala and lying vacant due to many reasons, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim directed an executive engineer to visit the place. He directed to check the UGD and drinking water supply facilities to the houses, information about the beneficiaries (if any), about Court cases and hurdls to handover the houses to the beneficiaries.
