Mangaluru: Poll panel’s notice to organisers for holding iftar party on a busy road

Mangaluru, April 1, 2024: The Election Commission served a notice to the organisers of an iftar party on a busy road in Mangalore on Friday.

Iftar is a meal held every day during Ramadan after sunset. Muslims break their fast with this meal.

Ifthar party issue

The poll body’s notice came after several videos went viral on social media, showing rows of chairs being arranged and food plates being placed on one side of the road in the city’s busy Mudipu Junction area.

After the video went viral, social media users questioned why the iftar party was held on a public road instead of indoors or at a public hall.

The Iftar party was attended by several rickshaw drivers, traders and locals of the area.

The poll panel’s notice was served to the organiser of the party, identified as Abu Bakar, for causing public nuisance by blocking the road by holding the iftar party.

Notably, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in place in Karnataka after the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls schedule, following which the administration is directly under the control of the Election Commission.
