This was how a young man who had come to Mangalore from Bagalkot in search of a job narrated his travail during the Prison Adalat held at the District jail premises on March 18, Tuesday evening. The young man who is married and has kids, had boarded a bus to Mangalore on March 16 and had reached the KSRTC bus stand at Bejai the next morning at 4.30 am.  On seeing the police men on patrol, he tried to run away and the cops who  felt his movement suspicious took hold of him. Though the man  explained   that he had arrived from Bagalkote and produced his ticket, the cops  didn’t budge and pushed him behind bars. His wife is unaware of his arrest and there is no lawyer to take up his case.

Another under trial said he was in the prison for the mistake of abusing his wife. He also said his wife has realised her mistake and was meeting him in the prison and has also assured to withdraw the complaint.

Yet another man said he was trapped in a theft case and was behind bars since several days. He also pleaded that he be released.

Meanwhile, a man said the Bajpe police had  arrested him four days ago  for the folly of  providing shelter to a  young pair of lovers  as the mother of the girl lodged a complaint against him.

Another youth said he had taken along with him a minor girl with her consent but the police had registered a case of kidnapping.

The judge who patiently heard the  grievances of the under trials assured to look into the cases and take further action.

The Prison Adalat was earlier inaugurated by First Additional Senior Civil Judge BN Sunil Kumar. Mallikarjuna and B Ganesh,  judges also spoke. B Sukumar, Varadaraj, advocates were also present.

PPS Ramesh, Jail Superintendent presided over the function.

Though five complainants had assured to come to the Adalat to withdraw the complaints so that the under trials could be released, none of them had arrived.
