Kasargod, June 1, 2014: The scourge of Endosulfan is well known in this region and the misery ravages entire families due to unbearable misery on many fronts. The Govt. may have provided meager help. The devastation is unimaginably greater.

One more sad incident again revealed it self June 1. It underscores the need by all humanitarian and Govt. agencies to step-up their efforts in all directions to bring succor to the victims of Endosulfan.

Reports confirm, Karthik (9), a seerely suffering victim of endosulfan, was admitted to the hospital on May 30, and was supposed to get discharged June 2. On June 1,  a nurse came to his room but found it locked from the inside. There was no response even after repeated knocking, the nurse then alerted the other staff.  On breaking open the door, the hospital staff found the father of the boy Thamban (50), the mother  Padmini (42) and Karthik hanging. Karthik was found to be gagged and tied from the window grill and it is suspected that the parents killed him before ending their own lives.

The parents Thamban and Padmini residents of Cheruvathur,  earlier lost two other children to endosulfan, and it is said that they were depressed by the fact that their third child too was suffering grievously due to endosulfan, their life was a misery due to deprivations all around and lack of help.   In 2009, they had attended a camp for endosulfan victims,  they had identity cards, But they had not received sufficient compensation or relief package from the government despite being eligible. Thamban worked as a mason at a construction site was financially poor and the family demands were rising due to many factors we see around us. It  is pathetic plight that this family faced with no support in sight.

Commissioner Mohammed Sagir has directed Kanhangad DSP to investigate the case. A human rights group has sought a report on the incident from the DC and the police.  Kanhangad police have registered a case.
