Mangalore, May 16, 2013: Suddatta Jain, President of Karmika Sene continued his indefinite hunger strike in front of D C Office on the 5th day on May 16, Thursday demanding better facilities at ESI Hospital.
Newly elected MLA of Mangalore South Constituency J R Lobo visited Suddatta Jain and spoke to him regarding the demands. He also urged Jain to call off his hunger strike, but Jain said that he has been going on hunger strikes with regard to ESI problem since 2009 and none of the representative or MLA have evinced any interest to solve the problem. But J R Lobo’s visit has brought in a feeling that the problem would be solved, Jain said.
Jain said his protest was against shortage of medical and other staff as well as poor maintenance of the hospital. The medical officer in charge of the hospital has also assured them that their demands will be soon met, but nothing materialized.
He also said that they have given a memorandum to DC N Prakash and in turn DC had given a letter to Hospital administration asking to provided good medical facilities for labourers and Beedi workers. But the ESI director has not honoured the DC’s directive, Jain said. This is not a problem faced by workers in Mangalore alone, but also across the state, he added.
MLA J R Lobo said that he will call a meeting of public representatives and hospital staff and discuss the problem and try to find a solution as soon as possible. He said he would take the problem to the government if the meeting failed to achieve the desired results. Lobo also assured to take up the problem with the DC and higher authorities.
When Lobo called the ESI director, she initially did not receive the call, but did so later when the MLA spoke to her about the problem.
