Karkala, July 05, 2014: The Udupi district unit of the National Union of Human Rights Parishat has come to the aid of an old woman who was abandoned by her children and was leading a solitary life in a pathetic state in an old cow shed at Bandasale in Marne village of Karkala taluk.
The Parishat’s district Chief Udaykumar Shetty and other office bearers visited the spot, gave first aid to the immobile woman and shifted her to the Udupi District Hospital for higher treatment. Udayakumar Shetty said efforts would be made to get her admitted to some old age home once she fully recovers.
The woman is 85 year old Sunanda Naik. Though she has a son and two daughters, none had come to her aid. The woman who was somehow managing all these years, was bed-ridden since the past few days. Local social workers Upendra Nayak and Jayaraj Hegde who pitied the old woman had given her food as well as ensured her good treatment. The matter was also brought to the notice of the media and the tahsildar was also intimated. In fact Sunanda Naik’s son Shekhar Naik used to avail benefits of Sandhya Suraksha in the name of his mother without fail but was not taking care of her.
The Tahsildar had event secured a report from the revenue inspector and village accountant who visited the spot.
Meanwhile, the Udupi District unit of the National Human Rights Parishat led by its president Uday Kumar Shetty, General Secretary Ratnaker Indrali, Vice President Mahesh Shetty Panivoor, Dinesh Bangera, PRO Chandrika Shetty Reshma Shetty and others rushed to the place where the woman was lying, and admitted her to the hospital.
