Historical milestone- Tulu to be taught as Language of Study in DK and Udupi

Mangalore, March 27: The state government has passed an order on Friday 26, permitting Tulu as a third language of study in schools placed in Dakshina kannada and Udupi districts. The government also implied to take necessary action to compose required study material and lessons.

 

Earlier, Tuluvas and some of the organization of undivided Dakshina Kannada located in Bangalore have continuously been pressurizing state government to include tulu as sixth language in government schools and private schools. Indicating Tulu language was in the threshold of extinction, it had succeeded to include in the Unesco’s list. It was Udaya Dharmasthala, member of Tulu Sahithya Academy, who incessantly put pressure on state government.

 

On the grounds, under secretary in the department of education, M N Somashekhar, has ordered for the introduction of Tulu as a language of study in schools in Dakshina Kannada district and udupi effecting from the academic year 2010-11.

Fighting tooth and nail and plead by tulu organizations, and also the interest shown by the Chief Minister of Karnataka B S Yadiyurappa made tulu to be taught from sixth standard.

 

On the occasion, Uday has memorized home minister, Dr V S Acharya, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar for their hard work and primary education minister, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, besides the Chief Minister for the decision.
