Gold Smuggling: Customs arrested three passengers including a woman at Mangalore intl. Airport

Mangalore, Feb 22: The customs officials at Mangalore International Airport foiled Gold smuggling in three separate cases on Sat urday, Feb 22, 2014. The officers seized gold totally weighing 1399.650 grams valued at Rs 43,38,915, in three separate cases. In two of the cases, gold was found in the passengers’ underwear!


In the first case, the officers seized 10 gold pieces, totally weighing 933.140 grams  and valued at Rs 28,92,734 concealed in an emergency light and a rechargeable LED flash light.

The gold was seized from the possession of a lady passenger named Mehazabin Rumana, a resident of Katipalla, Suratkal. She arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Saturday February 22 at around 5.30 pm by Jet Airways fight 9W531 from Dubai. The passenger was arrested later and produced before N S Patil, principal civil judge, senior division and chief judicial magistrate, Mangalore, who remanded the accused in judicial custody till February 24, 10 am.


In the second case, the officers seized six gold pieces, totally weighing 233.250 grams and valued at Rs 7,23,075.


The gold pieces were concealed in the underwear of a passenger named Ahmed Kabeer Moideen Kunhi a resident of Chattanchal Kaniyadukkam, Chengala, Kasaragod. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport on February 22 at around 7.30 am by Air India Express flight IX814 from Dubai.


In the third case, the officers seized six gold pieces, totally weighing 233.260 grams and valued at Rs 7,23,106, concealed in the underwear of a passenger named Hassainar Kombanadukkam Ismail, a resident of Chemnad, Kasaragod. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport on the same day around 7.30 am by Air India Express flight IX814 from Dubai.


Operations were conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, assistant commissioner of customs, Mangalore International Airport.  Further investigation is under progress in the above cases, under the guidance of Commissioner D Purushotham.
