Mangalore, June 18, 2014: A gang of eight persons reportedly gruesomely attacked two persons at Alekala near Ullal on June 17, Tuesday over a dispute pertaining to appointment to a local mosque committee.
The victims are AH Farooq (47) and Zakir Hussain(45). The condition of Zakir is said to be critical. The two were assaulted just a day ahead of the court hearing in the petition filed by Zakir Hussain against the South Kanara Salafi Movement which had failed to reinstate the two as the President and Secretary of the Al Furgan Masjid at Alekala.
It is learnt, the SKSM had removed them from the post a year after their appointment in 2012 though they had a three year term. As no valid reason was cited for their axing, Zakir had moved the court which had stated the appointment of DH Farooq as President and UP Fakruddin as Secretary Illegal. However, when the court order was not adhered to, Zakir lodged a complaint against 16 persons in Ullal police station and even alleged that he has been threatened of dire consequences if he entered the masjid.
It is now learnt that the duo was attacked in order to prevent them from appearing before the court on June 18, Wednesday for the hearing.
Some of the accused have been identified as Sporting Farooq, Shafiq, Faizal, Shashid, Iqbal and Meat Nazir. Two of them Faizal and Shahid were also injured and hospitalised, say sources.
Ullal police are investigating the case.
