Nagappa had lost his wife years ago and was living with his son Uday and daughter-in-law Vidya. Nagappa used to consume alcohol and create trouble, his Uday built his own house next to Nagappa’s and lived there with his wife and son.  This  worsened the situation as Nagappa used to frequently quarrel with his son for building a house on his land. Though the village panchayat tried to settle the issue several times, Nagappa and Uday were at logger heads. It is said that Nagappa used to threaten Vidya and Uday regularly. On June 13, Nagappa reportedly came home drunk and started threatening to kill Vidya. The locals intervened and situation quietened. On June 14 morning, Udaya filed a complaint at the Subramanya police station regarding the threat to his wife.

Nagappa, reportedly inebriated and in anger against his son for filing the complaint and  came to his home.  The son Uday was not at home, and he reportedly shot dead his daughter-in-law Vidya, with a gun that was in his house. Vidya’s son who had just returned from school saw his mother collapse on the floor and began screaming. Vidya died on the spot. Alarmed neighbours informed the police, and soon Nagappa was arrested. Puttur DySP H B Mendonca, circle inspector Satish B S, and Subramanya SI  Naik arrived at the spot. Subramanya police are investigating the case.
