Drowning episodes at two quarries take the lives of 5 kids

Mangalore, July 20, 2014: In a tragic incident, two families one at Moodbidri and the other at Bajpe were struck by tragedy as they totally lost five children in two separate drowning episodes on Sunday, July 20.

In the first case at Malady village in Belvai, Moodbidri, two girls drowned in a pond of water when they were playing near a quarry. The dead are named as Suraksha (7) and Sukanya (4), daughters of Suresh.  It is reported  the when the girls had gone to wash and were plating in the water,  long after they went to the quarry and still not returned, the family grew anxious and looked for them. It then came to light that the girls were stuck in the  pond at the quarry and were dead by then. Fire service and Moodbidri police rushed to the spot retrieved the bodies and made out a case.

In the second incident at Mijar, Yadavapadu, under Bajpe police limits, three kids of the family met with a watery grave in a quarry located just behind their dwelling. The children have been identified as Pranesh (12), Meghashree (11) and Yakshita (6), children of Vasu Shetty and Sita. it was found the children did not return home after play, their mother went searching for them and found their footwear near the pond at the quarry. Immediately she raised an alarm,  the locals rushed to the spot and searched through the stagnant water pond. Though they managed to bring the siblings out of the water and rushed them to hospital, all three breathed their last on in transit. The Bajpe police have registered the case.

There appears to be a serious need to have some control in such quarries looking at the many such incidents that are reported from time to time.
