Dalit leaders accuse police of inaction in probing complaints by SC/STs

 Mangalore, Mar 31, 2014:  Dalit leaders participating in the SC ST grievance redressal meet held at the Mangalore Police Commissioner’s office in the city on March 30, Sunday, accused the police of inaction in some cases of domestic harassment and violence  lodged by Dalits.

SP Anand, a Dalit leader who spoke at the meeting, drew the attention of the police authorities towards the case of a woman who had complained with the   Pandeshwar police on March 10 against her husband  accusing him of harassing her both physically and mentally. The complainant had also pointed out that her husband is an accused in a few murder cases, Anand said.

He further said the only thing the police did was to summon the accused to the station, question him and then release him after he denied the charges.

The aggrieved woman who was also present with her two children, said the torture meted out by her husband has increased after she lodged the complaint.

DySP (Law and Order)KV Jagadish who admitted that there was laxity in handling the situation and  assured that the accused will be booked under the relevant  act of domestic harassment.

 Anand also referred to the complaints lodged by two women from Kaprigudde who are facing harassment from relatives over a land dispute and also in the case of a man from Kadandale near Moodbidri who had even admitted before the police that he had assaulted  his wife.

R Hithendra, Mangalore Police Commissioner who chaired the meeting, assured to look into all the cases and ensure justice.
