DK, Udupi facing serious wrath of SW monsoon rains

Mangalore, July 21, 2014:  SW monsoon has brought heavy rains all through DK and Udupi districts and surroundings in the last 48 hours venting serious results. Low-laying areas are water logged and damage to life, property and more in the district has been serious. Sea erosion has peaked.

Copious rain and wind has caused river Kumaradhara to submerge the bridge connecting with Subrahmanya.With the flooding of the bridge, movement of vehicles on Subrahmanya-Mangalore state highway was disrupted till late morning. The devotees who had arrived at Subrahmanya from Bangalore and Dharmasthala were marooned. In spite of some break in rains, the water-level in Kumaradhara has reached the danger level and is flowing in level to the road. With Kumaradhara river in full spate, Snanaghatta (bathing ghat) at Subrahmanya is flooded. Flood water has entered all the shops in and around the Snanaghatta.

Low-lying areas in Malavoor, Moodushedde and Adamkudru too have been inundated and a cause for fear. A huge bamboo tree was uprooted on Kulkunda curve on Subrahmanya-Mangalore state highway and movement of vehicles ceased for a while and travelers were stranded. On Sunday July 20, Belthangady received 133.2 mm rainfall while Puttur received 120 mm, Mangalore— 80.5mm, Moodbidri—16.4 mm and Bantwal—7.2 mm rainfall.

 Karkala Scenario :  Movement of vehicles and people on Thellaru-Mundli-Jarkala road was suspended as a large portions of the road had caved in. Huge pits developed with the caving in of the road at three locations on the road stretch.

House belonging to Acharya family was inundated and have been shifted to safer places. Paddy fields belonging to of several farmers are flooded and it is feared that the crops will be lost.The Mundkoor-Kaje Marigudi road in Karkala is on the brink of being washed away. several walls have collapsed as also one in front of Kaje Mahammayi temple.

Sea erosion : Sea erosion is seen to have intensified greatly at Kodi Kanyaya in Sasthana in Udupi district. If the sea erosion continues at this rate  the fisheries road is likely to be damaged or washed away.  The boulders dumped to check sea erosion have already been washed away which is a great loss. The waves are lashing the fisheries road with ferocious force for a while now.  With Swarna and Seetha rivers in spate, the low-lying areas in Brahmavar and Barkur too have been flooded.

With rapidly increasing momentum of sea erosion, the fisheries road at Maravanthe too is facing threat. The giant waves are lashing the huge boulders and the road has developed deep gaping fissures. If the road is washed away, then water will enter into the houses owned by fishermen located near the road. The fishermen are crying to the authorities to initiate urgent measures to prevent sea erosion and the worst scenario.
