DC callsto revisit poor performance of district in the recent SSLC exams

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 18, 2014: In his inaugural speech at an education convention, organised by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instructions, Pre-University Education Department, DK District High School Head Masters’ Association and PreUniversity College Principals’ Association and Federation of PUC  recently;  Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim stated,  Dakshina Kannada district has slipped to 29th position in SSLC ranking this year, it is not the question of ranks, but it is high time to introspect and analyse why our education system allows one out of every five students to fail, which can affect the development of the nation.

DC The DC said if the district is in third place in quality of education, there is no surprise. When the region was a part of Madras Presidency, it was unbeatable in the field of education and it continued during the period of Mysore Wodeyars too. “Our aim should not out do Chikkodi or others. Consider Kerala which has registered 97 per cent results in SSLC as an example, let us try to beat them. Each school should aim at 100 per cent and DDPI should support them with instructions and facilities. When 86 schools of our district can do that, others can also achieve the same. failure is at the top and it can be achieved,” he said.

DC disappointed :  “In a meeting convened after the declaration of SSLC results, many good suggestions were received from few rural schools which achieved 100 % result, but those were not communicated to other schools,” he expressed disappointment towards officials. Speaking on ranks, the DC said rank doesn’t matter where institutions admit students who score above 90 per cent and interview parents before admitting the student to test whether they are graduates or not.

‘Teachers be role models’  : In his keynote address, Savanoor (Puttur) Vidyarashmi Vidyalaya Principal Seetharam Kevala said that in the noble profession called teaching, students, teachers, parents and public are like the four  wheels of a vehicle. For a school, three types of  activities are needed, physical building, social building, and academic building. Anybody can provide the first two, but only teachers can build academics, he said. “Suggestions are free and anyone can give it. So, teachers themselves should become models to their students,” he said and claimed that motherly approach towards students can help in their academic progress. Retired teachers including Sridhar Rai of Puttur Ramakrishna High School and Reena Rodriques of Lourdes School were felicitated. Teachers from the schools which registered 100 per cent result also received honours. Thumbe PU College Principal Gangadhar Alva K spoke on ‘New SSLC examination system- review’. There was much positive action at the meet.
