Bantwal, 10, july 2014: On July 9, DK DC A B Ibrahim on his way to Neriya of Beltangady taluk from Mangalore, was caught up in traffic at BC Road due to drainage works in the area. At this point acting on a tip off he observed several sand-laden lorries among the vehicles caught up in the traffic jam and with the assistance of district SP Dr Sharanappa who was on the spot and other police officials, inspected and verified the documents of the sand carriers.
They were found to be illegally carrying the sand out of the district and grossly overloaded. The trucks were seized cases booked and fines to the tune of Rs 2.17 lakh was imposed on the culprits.
Out of 33 lorries, at least 7 lorries did not have permits. Majority lorries were overloaded with sand. Tahsildar Malleswamy assisted in weighing the lorries and verified the documents. Some of the lorries were loaded with even 15 tonnes sand instead of permitted 10 tonnes.
Meanwhile the DC and SP paid attention to the hurdles of two way traffic and had the divider near the entrance to BC Road from Mangalore and stones laid across the road cleared; however DC did not accept to change and the two-way traffic will continue according to information.
Sand extracted from Jeppinamogaru, Kavoor, Kuloor, Adyar, Kannur, Farangipet, Thumbay and Ullal is often transported illegally to Bangalore, Mysore, Kushalnagar, K R Nagara, Sakleshpura, and Belur. Regional Transport Officer Afzal Ahammed Khan, Mines and Geology officer Nagendra Kumar among others were present. The question in the public minds are how come this regular sand smuggling without check and what if our DC was not in that traffic snarl on July 9?
