Mangaluru, Feb 23, 2024: Continued medical education (CME) on TB was conducted jointly by the departments of Community Medicine, and Microbiology KS Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), A constitutent college under Nitte Deemed to be University on 23rd February 2024 from 9 am to 4.30 pm. The chief guest of the inaugral ceremony of the CME was Dr Thimmaiah H r (District Health Officer of, Dakshina Kannada), presiding officer Dr Sukanya (HOD Biochemistry), Dr Rahul Hegde associate professor department of community medicine, dr mridula professor department of Microbiology, kshema were present along with the organising secretary of the CME, Dr Ankeeta associate professor, department of Community Medicine kshema were also present. This was followed by lighting of the ceremonial lamp with Maitri Bhajata recording playing in the background.

 

KSHEMA


The chief guest Dr Thimmaiah who told that the death rate among TB patients in Dakshina Kannada was 11% and further emphasised the need for development of better strategies to tackle the menace of tuberculosis. He reiterated the efforts towards end tb strategy by 2025 need to be strentghened in the district through such programmes. Dr. Shriran Shetty, head of gastro enterology, kmc manipal spoke on the Challenges in extra pulmonary TB diagnosis, treatment and adherence, under the national programme for elimination of tuberculosis, under Prevent, Detect, Treat and build strategy.
 
Dr Akshaya KM, professor and head of community medicine department yenepoya medical college, yenepoya deemed to be university spoke about Operational Research in Tuberculosis and funding opprtunities for tuberculosis research.

Dr. Madhavi Bhargava associate professor in community medicine department yenepoya medical college, yenepoya deemed to be university spoke about how Good nutrition play an important role in treatment and prevention of TB. Even a 5 percent weight gain in the first 2 months protected against TB deaths.
 
Dr Ankeeta Menona Jacob associate professor of community medicine department KSHEMA, nitte deemed to be university spoke regarding the Role of gram panchayath by ’Healthy Village’ concept and the steps to be followed to declare a panchayath as TB Mukt Panchayath.

Dr Chandramouli assistant professor in pulmonary medicine department, kshema nitte deemed to be university spoke about the challenges in treating TB coinfected patients with HIV, Covid, Alcoholic use, Tobacco usage, Diabetes, Nutrition problems, in whom we see increased morbidity and mortality due to  Tuberculosis. Dr. Prathiba Bhat U, associate professor, department of microbiology spoke about the TB diagnostic tests endorsed by WHO, The molecular based tests for rapid diagnostic testing for drug resistance like CBNAAT and LPA. Dr. Jose Jom Thomas, WHO consultant for TB mangalore region, and spoke about the National Strategic Planning (2017-2025), Enumeration of Vision, Goal and objectives and strategies to tackle TB under the plan and the way forward to achieve end tb straegy in India.
