BJP leads protest - lack of housing for BC and poor classes

Mangalore, June 22, 2014: Under the leadership of a former minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, BJP party workers staged a protest against the Karnataka government failing to construct houses for the poor under the Basava Vasathi Yojane (Rural Housing Scheme).The Backward Classes Morcha of Dakshina Kannada unit of BJP spear headed the protest in front of the DK deputy commissioner’s office  June 21. They contended  the state government failed to provide housing scheme facilities to beneficiaries in backward taluks in Karnataka.

BJP district vice president Umanath Kotian spewing venom, said Karnataka government was and is neglecting the needs of the people of backward classes who are destitute. The chief minister had made promises to construct 20 houses in each gram panchayat under the housing scheme, the beneficiaries in the state have not yet received housing facilities. A total of 20,000 houses were to be constructed in Karnataka under the housing scheme in 2013-14. The Karnataka state government has miserably failed, he said.

The Karnataka government was held in ridicule for rejecting the proposal to legalise the illegal houses built by the poor, he said that there were dozens of poor people from backward classes in the state who were homeless. Instead of building homes for the underprivileged, the government wants to throw out the poor from homes built on acquired land, he said, demanding that the government should immediately provide homes to the deserving sections of the poor people.

Total 4,060 houses were sanctioned for Dakshina Kannada by the government under the scheme in 2013-14. MLC K Monappa Bhandary, BJP district president Pratap Simha Nayak, Kishore Rai and many personalities  led the demonstration and protested.  A proper memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner DK.
