In the first phase, the recruitment of 6,500 driving staff and 300 technical staff has been approved. Of these, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will recruit 2,000 driver-cum-conductors and 300 technical staff; North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) will recruit 2,000 driver-cum-conductors and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will recruit 2,500 conductors.

Meanwhile, the Kalyan Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) has already started the recruitment process of 1,619 driving staff, following which a final selection list will be released at the end of January 2024. The KKRTC has also received permission to recruit 300 conductors and is in the process of issuing a notification.

The process for recruiting 8,719 driving and technical staff has begun across all four RTCs.

In addition, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday also set a target to purchase 5,675 new buses in view of the huge response and public appreciation for the Shakti Scheme (free bus service for women) across the state and instructed officials to boost the strength of the buses in this regard.

Siddaramaiah directed that the purchase process be completed soon as the government has already provided Rs 500 crore for the purchase of new buses in the budget. “There has been a 15 per cent increase in the number of passengers travelling in state road transport corporations after launching the Shakti Scheme. It is important to add additional schedules and buses to provide better service to the passengers,” he said.

A discussion was also held with transport minister Ramalinga Reddy about the revenue target collection of the transport department and the financial management of the RTCs. The officials also submitted that a Rs 83 crore fine has been collected from vehicle inspection.

Meanwhile, over 81 crore women have benefited from the Shakti Scheme with the RTCs incurring a cost of over Rs 1,900 crore, since June 11.
