Mangalore, June 4, 2014: In a rather interesting development, Raphael Raj, Chief Secretary of Akhila Karnataka Catholic Christara Kannada Association (AKCCKA) was taken into custody on June 3, Tuesday by the Bunder police on the basis of a complaint lodged by Christian leaders including Konkani Sahitya Academy President Roy Castelino and Konkani Prachar Andolan President Stany Alvares.
This was shortly after Raphael Raj addressed a press meet wherein he hurled allegations against Bangalore Archbishop Dr Bernard Moraes in connection with the murder of Fr K J Thomas, Rector of St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary. Raphael had also demanded a CBI investigation into the case.
A communiqué from Konkani Academy Chief Roy Castelino described the allegations made by Raphael as completely false and that they have hurt the sentiments of the Christians. He also demanded immediate action against him.
He further said "The police who have efficiently investigated the murder of Fr K J Thomas recently arrested three accused, and are taking further action according to law.”
He also alleged that Raphael Raj had levelled baseless allegations against the Archbishop with a vicious motive to spark enmity.
Raphael is still in judicial custody and is being interrogated. Earlier, the police decided against arresting him. In the meantime, large number of people who gathered outside the Bunder station demanded Raphael’s arrest.
