173 new Covid-19 positive cases in DK; 109 cases in Udupi on July 28

Mangaluru, July 28, 2020: 173 people from Dakshina Kannada and 109 people from Udupi tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. Four more Covid-19 fatalities were recorded in DK and one death in Udupi today.

Amongst the four deceased in DK were, a 84-year-old male from Sakleshpur, 25 and 62-year-old men from Bantwal and a 72-year-old man from Bhatkal. As many as 41 patients were discharged from hospital today.

Among the 173 who tested positive in DK, 91 with influenza-like illness (ILI), 22 with SARI symptoms, one has international travelling history, 21 are primary contacts and contacts of 38 are being traced. With this the total Covid 19 positive cases in the DK district rose to 5,103. As many as 2,338 persons have been discharged and 2,632 cases are currently active. 135 deaths have occurred including 4 deaths today.

Udupi district has reported 109 fresh cases on Tuesday. Now, the Udupi has a total of 3,722 cases with 1,461 still being treated at the designated hospitals. 2,239 patients recovered and discharged including 55 discharges today. The district has reported 22 COVID-19 fatality.


If the tapering of cases was some matter of comfort for the respective district administrations, the 12 covid19 related deaths, including a record eight deaths in Udupi meant that more people with co-morbidities continued to fall prey to the pandemic. Two of the four deaths reported in DK including three male and a female were from Bantwal and one each from Sakleshpur in Hassan district and the other from Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district.

As per details in the state bulletin of seven of the eight recorded deaths in Udupi, two of the patients – both male aged 53 and 40 respectively - were brought dead on arrival to hospitals on July 23 and 26 respectively. Other victims included 46, 63 and 40-year-old males respectively and 60 and 62-year-old females.

In a related development, Kota Shrinivas Poojari, DK district minister took up the issue of 124 Covid19 related deaths in the district with deputy chief minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan via video-conferencing with the district administration. DC Sindhu B Rupesh said out of these, 79 were reported in private hospitals and rest in district Wenlock Hospital. Poojari sought clarity from the higher education minister on categorisation of Covid19 deaths.
