We can win over death by yoga: Sakshi Maharaj

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, June 10, 2015: Slamming those who are opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious yoga event later this month, controversial BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj on Wednesday stressed that practising yoga has nothing to do with religion.

sakshimaharaj.jMaharaj, who has a history of issuing provocative statements, said: "This (yoga) is not communal; it is good for the health. We can win over death by yoga."

The Unnao MP said that people who are criticising Modi’s yoga are doing so because they have failed to find any fault in Modi’s regime and that Muslims have also believing in the Prime Minister.

"No one is left with anything against Modiji that is why he is being criticized. Muslims have started believing that he is developing the nation," Maharaj said.

Maharaj’s statement comes just a day after another BJP firebrand leader Yogi Adityanath’s remark that all those opposed to the Surya Namaskar (Prayers to the Sun) at the PM’s yoga event should leave India and have no right to use the sun.

"Those who do not want Yoga should leave India’s land. They have no right to use the sunlight anymore," Adiyanath said at an event in Gorakhpur, his Lok Sabha constituency.

"Those who do not subscribe to Surya Namaskar should sink in the sea or live in a dark room," he added.

Some of recent controversial statements by Sakshi Maharaj:

"Rahul Gandhi eats beef, and goes to the holy shrine (Kedarnath) without purifying himself. The earthquake was bound to happen." - After Nepal’s devastating earthquake in April this year.

"The concept of four wives and 40 children will not work in India and the time has come when a Hindu woman must produce at least four children in order to protect Hindu religion." - In January this year.

Maharaj had also stoked a row by describing Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as a "patriot". He was forced to apologise in Parliament for that remark.
