Pranav Dhanawade, Mumbai School Cricketer Re-Writes Record Books

Mumbai, Jan 05,2016: Mumbai school cricketer Pranav Dhanawade, son of a Kalyan auto-rickshaw driver, entered the history books scoring a 1000 runs in an innings during the H.T. Bhandari Cup inter-school cricket tournament organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). (Click here for latest Cricket stories)

 

The youngster was batting on 921 at lunch on Tuesday with his team’s score on 1337. He started his innings with a broken bat and switched to a new one mid-way. He crossed the four-figure mark in the second session of play. For the record, former West Indian captain Brian Lara has the highest first-class score of 501 not out scored in 1994, playing a County match for Warwickshire against Durham.

Pranav’s 1000 runs came off 317 balls.He eventually finished on 1009 not out after his team declared at 1465/2. His innings lasted 323 balls along with 129 fours and 59 sixes.

Representing KC Gandhi School, Kalyan, Dhanawade smashed Arya Gurukul School bowlers all over the park to surpass Arthur Collins’ score of 628 not out in 1899 . Dhanawade’s majestic knock, that was studded with 78 fours and 30 sixes, helped his side reach 956 for one at the close of play on Monday. He was unbeaten on 652.

Collins had scored 628 not out in a Junior House Match in June, 1899 in England. Collins was an Englishman born in India, but never went on to play first-class cricket. Australian Charles Eady scored 566 in 1901.

Prithvi Shaw (546 in 2013) of Mumbai school had earlier held the Indian record when he bettered Armaan Jaffer’s 473, scored in a Harris Shield match in 2013. Armaan is the nephew of former Test batsman Wasim Jaffer.

Armaan was in the news in December 2010 when he slammed 498 in the Under-14 Giles Shield to break the record held by Sarfaraz Khan (439 in 2009-10).

Dhanawade’s innings brought back memories of the mammoth 664-run partnership between Mumbaikars Vinod Kambli (349) and Sachin Tendulkar (326) for Shardashram Vidyamandir in February 1988 during the Harris Shield tournament.

Impressed by his performance, the Maharashtra Government has decided to bear Pranav’s educational and coaching expenses, according to reports.
