With the CPI (M)-led LDF having announced that they will go to any extent to prevent Mani from presenting the Budget, it was expected that the Assembly will witnesses a tumultuous day but the scenes that played out this morning were unprecedented.

While hundreds of Left and BJP Yuva Morcha activists laid siege outside the Assembly, LDF MLAs took it upon themselves to create ruckus inside the Assembly to prevent Mani from entering the House.

However, the Finance Minister entered the House from the back door. He was surrounded by UDF MLAs and watch-and-ward staff as he tried to make his way to his seat.

With the LDF MLAs turning aggressive, he read a few paragraphs standing amid pushing and shoving and later tabled the Budget.

Some Opposition MLAs damaged Speaker N Sakthan`s chair and computers, and shouted slogans demanding Mani’s resignation.

The chaos left four LDF MLAs with minor injuries; they were rushed to a hospital.

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau had registered a case against Mani in December last year in connection with the allegations that he had accepted bribe from bar owners to renew liquor licences.

The allegations were levelled by Kerala state Bar Hotel Owner’s Association Working president Biju Ramesh.
