Maharashtra, April 20, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a swipe at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and said he will run away from Wayanad in Kerala as he was finding it difficult to get people’s support there.

Addressing a rally in Maharashtra’s Nanded, PM Modi referred to Gandhi as shehzada (prince) and said that Congress was waiting for polling in Wayanad on April 26. Taking a dig, he said Gandhi would "run away" from the seat the way he "ran away" from Amethi in 2019.

"Congress ke shehzade unhe bhi Wayanad mein sankat dikh raha hai. Shehzade aur unki toli April 26 ko Wayanad mein voting ka intezaar kar rahe hain... Jaise Amethi se bhagna pada, aap maan ke chaliye wo Wayanad bhi chodenge (Congress’s prince (Rahul Gandhi) is facing a crisis in Wayanad. Prince and his aides are waiting for polling on April 26. You can assume that he will leave Wayanad as he ran away from Amethi)," he said in Nanded.

Gandhi has been fielded by the Congress from Wayanad for a second term. In 2019, he contested from Wayanad and Amethi, his family bastion. In Amethi, he was defeated by Union Minister Smriti Irani, while he managed to secure a win from Wayanad.

Speaking at the rally, the PM also questioned the INDIA bloc parties about their combined leader after the polls.

"INDIA bloc is unable to tell the people of India who will be the combine’s leader," he said.

PM Modi further said that Congress leaders had accepted defeat even before the announcement of the polls.

"They (Congress) may claim anything, but the reality is that Congress leaders have accepted defeat even before the announcement of polls," said PM Modi, who is eyeing a third term.

He also accused the Congress of putting hurdles in the development of Maharashtra.

"Congress put hurdles in Maharashtra’s development for decades," PM Modi said.

During the rally, PM Modi also appealed to people to ensure maximum voting in the elections.

Elections for the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra will be held in five phases from April 19 to May 20. Results will be declared on June 4.

In Nanded, voting will take place in the second phase on April 26.
