New Delhi, Jan 05,2018 : During the recently concluded Assembly election in Gujarat, the two were locked in a bitter war of words, however, it seems that PM Narendra Modi and his predecessor have moved on. PM Modi on Friday, the last day of Winter Session of Parliament, walked up to Manmohan Singh and shook hands with him.

As soon as Chairman M Venkiah Naidu adjourned the House sine-die and ‘Vande Mataram’ was rendered, Modi was seen moving towards the Opposition benches shaking hands with some members, including Manmohan Singh.

Thaw in Relationship

He reached the seat of the former PM and shook hands with him. The two leaders were also seen chatting with each other.

Among others with whom the Prime Minister was seen shaking hands were Deputy Chairman P J Kurien and veteran Congress leader Karan Singh, who was bid farewell by the Upper House today as his tenure ends on January 27.

The leaders were seen greeting each other recently during an event organised on the anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack. The ‘awkward’ handshake had come amidst a raging row over PM Modi’s accusations against Manmohan Singh. (Also Read: Handshake in Delhi After Bitter Barbs in Gujarat: PM Modi, Manmohan Singh Meet)

War of Words

The show of cordiality between the incumbent and the former PMs today follows a rare row that broke out last month after Modi insinuated that Manmohan Singh had colluded with Pakistan in the Gujarat polls and latter hitting back saying a “dangerous precedent” was being set by such accusations and seeking apology.

Both the Houses had witnessed stormy protests over the issue with an adamant Opposition seeking apology from Modi for his statement during Gujarat poll campaign and the BJP sticking to its point that PM would not apologise.

Addressing an election rally in Palanpur in Gujarat, Modi sought to suggest that Pakistan was trying to influence the assembly polls in the state.

Modi claimed that some Pakistani officials and Manmohan Singh met at Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar’s house over dinner on December 6. This was a day before Aiyar’s “neech” jibe against Modi that led to his suspension from the party. In a rare counterattack, Manmohan Singh slammed PM Modi and sought an apology for his “ill thought transgression.”

“I sincerely hope that Prime Minister will show the maturity and gravitas expected of the high office he holds instead of concentrating his energy solely on erroneously conceived brownie points,” Manmohan Singh had said. “I sincerely hope that he will apologise to the Nation for his ill thought transgression to restore the dignity of the office he occupies,” he added.
