PM Modi says Centre was not consulted on Masarat Alam’s release; PDP remains defiant

New Delhi, Mar 09, 2015:  Devender Singh Rana of National Conference says everything which is happening in J&K is as per mutual understanding between BJP-PDP. It is clearly a script written much before oath taking ceremony, adds Rana.

Another Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala urges the PM to not shed crocodile tears. The PM should rather form concrete policy against anti-national elements, opines Surjewala.

Congress spokesperson Salman Soz says PM Modi and the J&K CM themselves were involved in government formation. We do wish them luck, but there are times when people raise questions, advises Soz.

The report by the J&K government says that the high court has granted him bail in all 27 cases as he could be detained for only two years on the same grounds, says Rajnath Singh.
   
Twenty-seven criminal cases, including those of murder, sedition and conspiracy, are pending against Masarat Alam since 1995. He was detained eight times, says Singh.

PDP leader Mir Mohammad Fayaz, meanwhile, questions why Congress did not have problem when Yasin Malik was released during the tenure of a PDP-Congress coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. "When PDP-Congress government was in power, Yasin Malik was released. Then there was no ruckus," says Fayaz. "People of Kashmir want peace. During NDA government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the people of Kashmir had come out and voted; now they have polled 70 percent votes. Do these people not want peace in Jammu and Kashmir," he questions.
   
Sharad Yadav (JD-U) says it was BJP’s responsibility to clarify on the issue as it had been having parleys with PDP for two months before forming the government in J&K.
   
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress leader Anand Sharma submits a notice to suspend the business of the House and discuss the issue. Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien does not allow the suspension of business. However, he allows some members to speak on the issue. Raising the matter, Anand Sharma (Congress) alleges that the Jammu and Kashmir government was "encouraging separatists and anti-national activities. ... We cannot accept this... This country is not ready to accept this."

On the first of the two-day bandh, which started yesterday, JKNPP patron Bhim Singh had said the decision to release Aslam is “against the nation”. “How can BJP now call itself a nationalist (party),” Sigh added. JKNPP activists held protest demonstrations in Jammu and Udhampur against the state government over the release of Alam.

The Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the Jammu and Kashmir government on circumstances leading to release of hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam from prison.

Despite being a Sunday, officials of the Kashmir division in the Home Ministry worked overtime to gather all facts from the state government on the issue which has led to strain in the PDP-BJP alliance.

The ministry wanted to know the reasons that led to release of 44-year-old Alam, who spearheaded 2010 agitation, from the Baramulla jail on Saturday night.

According to sources, Alam had around 15 cases pending against him which included those registered under Section 120 and 121 Ranbir Penal Code (waging war against the country) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

With Opposition parties in Parliament already up in arms over Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s statement last Sunday when he credited Pakistan, Hurriyat Conference and militant outfits for smooth conduct of elections in the state, the Government expects disruption over this development as well when the session resumes on Monday after the Holi break.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to outline the Government position on the issue which has kicked up a political storm.

The sources said Union Home Secretary LC Goyal had also spoken to Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police K Rajendra to ascertain the reasons behind the release of Alam, who has also been booked by police under criminal conspiracy for 2010 agitation during which about 120 youths lost their lives.

In the meantime, Alam on Sunday said the PDP-BJP government had done him no favour as his release was part of normal judicial process.

"I have not been done any favour by the government. My release is part of the normal judicial process," Alam told a news agency.

On the controversy related to his release, the Muslim League leader said, "If there is any hue and cry over my release, it is their headache."

Alam rejected the suggestions that there was a secret deal between him and the state government over this release and it could lead to dialogue between the Centre and the separatists.
