New Delhi, Feb 17, 2015 (IBN Live): In the wake of recent attacks on churches in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reached out to the Christian community. He attended a function organised to celebrate elevation of Indian saints, Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphasia.

Modi with priestsModi did not mince any words when he said his government will ensure complete freedom of faith. He also said that the Centre will make sure no religious group incites violence against anyone.

Modi said, "The world is increasingly witnessing division on basis of religion. My government will ensure that there is complete freedom of faith and that everyone has undeniable rights to retain the religion of his or her choice."

Modi added, "The government will ensure that the no religious group can incite violence against another. I appeal to all religious groups to act with restraint."

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP PJ Kurien said the presence of the Prime Minister at the function was an assurance for them. "Hindus and Christians have lived side by side for centuries in India. These attacks that took place are just an aberration. The presence of Prime Minister here is assurance for us," Kurien said.

Major Archbishop George Alencherry said, "Those using force to propagate must be taken to task. Anti-conversion laws will pave way for animosity."
