Shaista AmberLucknow, November 6, 2016: The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) on Saturday opposed triple talaq saying it made the lives of Muslim women “hell”.

It sought enactment of a Muslim marriage law in accordance with the Shariat (Islamic law).

Speaking to reporters here, AIMWPLB chairperson Shaista Amber called for enactment of laws that made divorces tougher while making marriages easier.

“We find instances of triple talaq every now and then...it has made the lives of Muslim women hell...we must find a way to deal with it,” Shaista said. She also said that the Muslim women often hesitated in getting cases of violence against them registered with the authorities as they feared that the men would divorce them if they did so.

She also demanded a law to prevent the Muslim men from getting married more than once.

Shaista said that triple talaq (giving divorce by uttering the word ‘talaq’ thrice in one go) should not be allowed.

“A Muslim marriage act should be passed by Parliament,” she said.

She also said that the ‘darul kaza’ (Shariat court) should include a woman in office so that the women victims could narrate to them their plight without any hesitation.
Shaista also demanded establishment of ‘madrasas’ (Islamic seminary) exclusively for Muslim women so that they could clearly know their rights in the light of the Shariat. She, however, opposed the move for a Uniform Civil Code.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has strongly opposed any move to tamper with the personal laws concerning the Muslims. It has launched a signature campaign to garner support for its stand and apprise the Centre about the feelings of the Muslims in the country on the issue.
