Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Dec 28, 2016, DHNS: Only around 13,000 NGOs now have the licence to collect foreign donations after the government cancelled permission to around 20,000 organisations in the past one year.

Licence The Foreigners Division conveyed this to Home Minister Rajnath Singh during a review meeting on Tuesday. There were around 33,000 NGOs in the country which had licence under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), 2010.

However, 20,000 organisations lost their licence during checks conducted by the ministry. The exercise of reviewing the working of NGOs started about a year ago and the process is still on, sources said.

According to the presentation, around 3,000 organisations have submitted applications for licence renewal, while the Ministry of Home Affairs received 2,000 new applications for registration under the FCRA for the first time.

An additional 300 NGOs are currently under prior permission category, but not registered under the FCRA.
