Lalitgate, Vyapam rock Rajya Sabha: Arun Jaitley, Sitaram Yechury throw rules at each other

New Delhi, July 22, 2015: The Lalit Modi controversy and the Vyapam scam continued to halt proceedings in Parliament on the second day of Monsoon Session after the government claimed rules do not permit state matters being discussed and the opposition rejecting the argument saying the House has a right to discuss national matters.

Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, cited rules saying the demand for the resignation of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for nearly 45 deaths in the Vyapam scam is a state law and order issue and therefore outside the purview of Parliament.

To which Left leader Sitaram Yechury countered: "We have repeatedly said a discussion no substitute for investigation. Vyapam is not a state subject since people lost their lives outside the state. The people involved in the scam must step down and a probe should be done."

Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati also backed the argument, passionately making the point that Vyapam is not a state issue. In the Lok Sabha the Congress has been demanding the resignation of Chouhan as well as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked his MPs to not be cowed down by the opposition attack and remain proud of their work.
