Earlier in the day, high drama took place outside the Patiala House Court when a group of lawyers assaulted journalists. Also, Kanhaiya Kumar was manhandled by the lawyers outside the courtroom.

Reacting to the events, the Supreme Court court rushed a team of six lawyers with police protection to assess the ground situation in the court, hours after it had issued a series of directions to ensure peace in the court in the wake of Monday’s violence.

The SC bench comprising Justice J Chelameswar and Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre asked Delhi Police counsel Ajit Sinha to communicate to the Patiala House Court magistrate to adjourn the hearing of Kanhaiya’a case.

The apex court’s direction came after senior counsel Indira Jaising on Wednesday afternoon told the court that the courtroom of Metropolitan Magistrate Loveleen is bolted from inside and all those inside are fearing for their safety as sloganeering is going on outside.

The six-member team comprises Kapil Sibal, Rajeev Dhavan, Dushyant Dave, ADN Rao, Ajit Sinha and Harin Raval.

The JNU leader has been booked on the charge of raising anti-India slogans.

Earlier in the day, a section of lawyers carrying Indian flags shouted slogans like ’Bharat mata ki jai’ and ’JNU murdabad’. They also shouted slogans against the JNU and demanded shutting down of the premier educational institution, terming it "anti-national".

On the other hand, a group of lawyers protesting against Kanhaiya Kumar’s arrest demanded his immediate release.

Kumar was arrested after anti-India slogans were raised at an event held on the JNU campus to commemorate Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s execution on February 9.
