Government bans northeast terror outfit NSCN-K

Mangalore Today News Network

Manipur, June 12, 2015: The government has decided to ban Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), the northeast militant group which was behind the Manipur ambush in which 18 Indian Army soldiers were killed earlier this month.

According to sources, a Cabinet note to put NSCN-K into the list of banned terrorist organisations was moved on June 10, a day after Indian Army carried out a surgical strike inside Myanmar border to neutralize militants behind the attack on the convoy of Indian Army’s 6th Dogra Regiment in Manipur’s Chandel district.

Reports earlier claimed that 50-100 militants were killed in the Indian Army’s hot pursuit inside Myanmar’s territory. However, questions are now being raised over the number of militants killed in the offensive. Reports have emerged that only seven bodies have been recovered and less than a dozen were injured.

Moreover, if a report by the Indian Express is to believed, the hot pursuit of the targets - a camp in Onzia and two camps in Ponyo roughly 11 km from Myanmar border - did not hit the alleged perpetrators of June 4 ambush.

Notably, the army has not released any photographs of the killed insurgents. No official claim was made by the Indian Army on the number of casualties.
