Delhi, Jun 09, 2020: A shocking figure has emerged in the country’s capital Delhi concerning teachers. According to data released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), so far more than 100 government teachers employed in Delhi government schools have been infected by coronavirus.

Apart from this, 50 other teachers who were on duty to distribute ration in schools or employed in other administrative work have also tested coronavirus positive, Hindustan Times reported.

So far, four government school teachers have lost their lives due to Covid-19. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the first teacher who died of the viral infection.

Ajayvir Yadav, the general secretary of the Government School Teachers Association, said "It is very unfortunate that teachers are becoming victims of Covid-19 and many colleagues have died. In such a situation, we demand from the government that compensation of Rs 1 crore be given to the teachers who died of the disease on compassionate grounds."

"Apart from this, the duty of the remaining teachers should be administered in such a way that the risk of infection is minimized and all types of PPE kits, masks and other means should be made available for their protection," Yadav added.

In Delhi, thousands of teachers are currently working in the duty of coronavirus prevention. Many of them are tasked with distributing ration, while many are also staffed in shelter homes and isolation centres.

Reacting on the deaths of MCD teachers, Delhi BJP president Aadesh Gupta said, "The life of teachers in the Kejriwal government is at risk, one teacher after another is getting infected and many teachers have lost their lives, so the government should take strict steps immediately. If not, then the future makers of our country will be in trouble themselves."

The BJP has immediately demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of the deceased teachers from the AAP government in Delhi.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, however, is an autonomous body that does not come under the Delhi government jurisdiction. In 2012, split into three smaller municipal corporations. Currently, the BJP has the highest number of elected representatives in all three corporations.
