The accused, Fayaz, also 23, was Neha’s ex-classmate. The CCTV footage from the campus showed Fayaz stabbing Neha several times with a knife and running away.
The college authorities and other students rushed Neha to the hospital, but she was declared brought dead.

According to sources, Fayaz, a resident of Belagavi district, had been stalking Neha for several days after she allegedly rejected his advances.

Police caught Fayaz with the assistance of Vidyanagar police in Hubballi.

Renuka Sukumar, Hubballi-Dharwad Commissioner of Police, said, "At around 4.45-5 pm, the incident happened where an ex-classmate of the girl Neha, studying MCA at BVB College, assaulted her with a knife. He studied BCA there. He stabbed her 6-7 times."

Sukumar further said, "What we know so far is that they knew each other as they studied together. Further details along with the motive will be known after interrogation."

A case of murder has been registered against Fayaz and further investigation is underway.

Geetha, Neha’s mother, told the media, "I came to pick her up and spoke to her once on the phone. Within five minutes of our conversation, chaos erupted, and someone mentioned she had been stabbed. I haven’t seen her face yet. I still believe my daughter is alive. I can’t believe she is gone."

Meanwhile, student group ABVP’s workers blocked the roads and protested against Neha’s murder, demanding the strictest punishment for the accused.

Pro-Hindu groups and BJP supporters also staged a protest outside the Vidyanagar Police Station.
