Bengaluru braces for heavy rain over next 2 days

Bengaluru, Sep 10, 2017 (TOI): Several parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, will continue to receive heavy rain for a couple of days.

Sundar M Metri, director in-charge of India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru, said the department had already issued a warning to civic agencies in Bengaluru and other parts of the state. "Heavy rain and thundershowers are expected across most parts of the state over the next two days. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 29 and 20 degrees Celsius respectively," he said.

According to IMD, the city received a total rainfall of 68.7mm on Friday, of which about 60mm was recorded in just two hours between 6pm and 8pm. "The impact was severe, since it happened during peak hours. Poor drainage is also to be blamed," a senior official said.

Data from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDC) shows that southern and western parts of the city saw heavy rainfall (64.5mm to 124.4mm) late on Friday with Bommnahalli and Konanakunte recording the highest (83.5mm) and Kengeri receiving 73mm.

Even parts of Central Bengaluru, Nagarbhavi, Kumaraswamy Layout, Basavanagudi, VV Puram, Herohalli, Lakasandra and Koramangala were pounded by heavy showers — the figures stood between 35.5mm and 64.5mm.

Experts say Bengaluru has received 278mm of rain (till 8.30am on September 9) in September alone, which is already above normal for the month: 211.9mm.

Analyzing the reasons for the downpour, a senior official from IMD said southwest monsoon has been vigorous over interior and coastal Karnataka in the past few days. "Heavy rainfall has been witnessed in districts like Bagalkote, Raichur, Belagavi, Koppal, Kalaburagi, Chikkamagaluru and Ballari," he added.
