In a tweet from his official account, Gambhir requested the BJP president to relieve him of his duties so that he can focus on his cricket commitments.

Gambhir also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for giving him the chance to serve the people.

"I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodiji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!" tweeted Gambhir on X.

Gambhir all set for return with KKR

Gambhir’s decision comes just days ahead of his return with KKR as their new mentor. The former India opener will be working closely with head coach Chandrakant Pandit.

Gambhir captained the Kolkata-based franchise from 2011-17 and led them to the IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. The announcement of Gambhir’s return to KKR was made official on November 21, 2023.

"Gautam Gambhir will return to KKR as "Mentor" and join hands with head coach Chandrakant Pandit," KKR said in a release.

The former India opener worked as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants during the 2022 and 23 seasons. Gambhir oversaw LSG’s run to the playoffs in both seasons, and was an integral part in their backroom staff.

KKR will be beginning their IPL campaign on March 23 as they face the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Kolkata. The two-time champions will be playing three matches in the first phase of the tournament.
