Sea erosion has intensified with monsoon - people find valuables on beaches

Udupi, June 14, 2014:  With progress of SW monsoon, sea erosion has intensified in Udupi district, particularly s in areas like Thottam, Marvanthe, Tenka Yermal, Gangolli, Shiroor, Udyavara Kanakoda, Malpe, Trasi, Bada Yermal, Hoode, Kota-Mannur, Kundapur Kodi, Shiroor Dombe, Kalihithlu in Byndoor. MLA Pramodh Madhawarj along with officials from Ports and Fisheries visited sea-erosion affected areas.


In Kaup region,coconut trees have been washed away and area surrounding Kuap light house is badly affected. The waves have reached the main stretch in Udyavara Kanakoda.

Deputy Commissioner Muddu Mohan stated,  measures have been taken to solve the problem of sea-erosion. Some areas have been identified and boulders will be dumped shortly to check further damages. Nearly eight seriously affected stretches have been identified. The works will be taken up and a nodal officer is being appointed for the purpose. The areas like Kalihitlu is already under the consideration and the precautionary measures are underway.

  Valuables found in erosion spots : The Malpe beach today witnessed hordes of people the area that faced sea erosion is said to have valuable articles and even gold strewn about. It is said that these valuable articles belonging to visitors and residents, who lost the same in the erosion are now surfacing. Some fortunate people found gold chain, finger rings, bracelet and coins. All these years, the shore in Malpe region was rarely affected by sea erosion.  Notices and other hoardings of safety put up on the shore too have been washed away. The temporary sheds that were built on the shore have also been washed by the huge waves.

Rainfall :  The district received 77.13 mm rainfall for the last 24 hours. Karkala 84.2 mm rain, Kundapur received 63.8 mm rainfall. Udupi received 83.4 mm rainfall.  Sea erosion has intensified at Ullal damaging more property on the shore.
