RTO directs school vehicles to strictly adhere to guidelines; warns action

Mangalore, May 28, 2013: Regional Transport Officer Mallikarjuna has issued stern instructions to all schools to ensure that the school vehicles mandatorily followed the guidelines laid down by the transport department.

The RTO who convened a meeting of heads of various schools at his office here on May 28, Tuesday, warned that the respective schools will be held responsible for any violation of rules. He also said that the permits of the erring vehicles will also be cancelled.

The RTO said the school vehicles should be painted in highway yellow colour, while  clearly mentioning the word ‘school vehicle’ in black paint on all the four sides.

The vehicle can ferry only the prescribed number of students and  should have adequate space for placing the bags of the student below the seats.

The RTO also stated that the doors of the vehicles should be firmly locked while ferrying students and that the vehicles should be equipped with first aid box and fire extinguishers. The name of the school and its phone number should also be clearly mentioned in the vehicle, Mallikarjuna said.

The drivers of the vehicle should have minimum five years of driving experience and  the vehicle should also be equipped with speed controllers. The vehicles also need to be certified that they are in good working condition, he said.

Even private vehicles ferrying students will have to follow rules, Mallikarjuna said adding the autorickshaws cannot ferry more than six students.
