Mangalore, Feb 12, 2014 :Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes has pressurised the Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge to take early steps to set up a separate Mangalore Railway Division under the control of Konkan Railways.
Oscar who has addressed a letter to Kharge on February 10, Monday has said that the setting up of a separate railway division would go a long way in the economic and social development of the region.
Oscar also drew the attention of the minister towards the fact that the Palakkad division has been neglecting the demands of the railway needs of the region including more trains and better passenger amenities and infrastructure.
This was the reason behind Mangalore being deprived of better connectivity to the rest of India despite having a Konkan railway line. The letter also stated that people of Mangalore are of the strong view that justice could be done only if Mangalore gets a separate railway division.
Even Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde in a separate letter to the Union Railway Minister has urged that Mangalore Railway station be separated from Southern Railway and brought under Konkan Railway jurisdiction.
