Mini Port at Mangalore soon - solution for fishermen

Mangalore, June 21, 2014: Addressing media persons during his visit to the Port City of Mangalore on June 20, Minister for Textiles and Ports Baburao Chinchansur has said that the State cabinet would give its approval for the mini port project implementation proposal in Mangalore soon. The project would give a permanent solution for many of the problems of fishermen, he said.

The Minister said that the Asian Development Bank has sanctioned Rs 911 crore for the shore protection and management project. In this eight year project, Rs 223 crore has been released to Ullal. Under this, for the redesign of breakwaters and to strengthen them, Rs 46 crore has been released and work is on progress. Work on building four inshore berths, two offshore reefs will also be finished soon, he said.

The mini port project would help in the overall development of Mangalore. Through this, the number of ports would increase to 12 and the dependence on Karavar port will decrease. It will help in exporting goods and bring in more revenue to the government. Moreover, it would help the local fishermen, he said.

The minister said that the Honnavar port will be developed in three years by spending around Rs 511 crore. The second phase of Karavar port development project which is worth Rs 1,500 crore, construction of captive jetty at Manki port of Uttara Kannada by spending Rs 46 crore and work on new port at Pavanikurave is on progress, he added. Meanwhile, he said that objections over Maritime Boards were cleared by the government and the board will be formed after the President’s approval. On sea-erosion.

Baburao Chinchansur said that works to check sea- erosion has been started in all parts of the coastal districts including Ullal, Karavar, Mulki and other places of DK and Udupi. At Ullal area, around 80 to 100 houses are in danger because of around 1,500 metres of sea erosion. Temporary restraining wall is being built using boulders by spending Rs 3.14 crore.

Meenakaliya Kurikatta and Mukka of Mangalore North Assembly constituency have faced about 550 metres of sea-erosion. Work on temporary granite restraining wall has been started, but it needs Rs 1.025 crores more. It is estimated that in Mangalore taluk, for 2,050 metre-long restraining wall, a fund of Rs 4.175 crore is needed. The CM has ordered to release Rs 40 crore more for the year 2014-15, the minister said.


Clash in presence of the minister :  Misunderstanding between Mangalore Port department Administration Assistant Niranjan Murthy and Port Corporator Abdul Lathif  developed into a clash in front of the Minister. Abdul Lathif alleged that Niranjan Murthy accused him of sedition, when he demanded justice for a person of his ward. “I raised the issue with higher officials and the government has sent transfer order to him.
