It is said that the situation threatened to turn violent when an audience member – allegedly an SDPI activist – confronted District in Charge minister Ramanath Rai regarding why Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat had not yet been arrested despite his promise to do so.

At this point it is said that Bajrang Dal activists who were present on the spot objected to the question as it was not pertaining to the political debate. Soon the situation got out of hand with Congress, BJP and SDPI activists abusing each other.

Finally, police took charge and resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the mob.

Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, a local RSS leader, has often attracted accusations of making communally provocative speeches. Though he is not involved in activities politics, public perception of him is that he is an invisible political mastermind who controls BJP with an iron hand.

It is also alleged that many instances of communal unrest and moral policing could not have taken place without his blessings. This had provoked Ramanath Rai to famously declare during the state assembly elections that his first task after coming to power would be to put Bhat behind bars. Rai is yet to fulfill this open promise, which is what must have resulted in today’s skirmish.

Fortunately all ended well without any major damage.
