Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru: September 8, 2015: As green activists have been opposing the on-going Yettinahole diversion or Nethravathi diversion project, Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Tuesday that he has written to the Union government urging it to stop the project till the doubts are cleared.

Addressing mediapersons here he said that last week he wrote a letter to the Union Water Resources Minister, Uma Bharti, to this effect. He has sought an appointment with the Minister to discuss the issue.

Opposing the project, Mr. Kateel said the State government had proposed it at an estimated cost of Rs. 13,000 crore. However, the government has not made it clear from where it will mobilise the funds.

The project involves civil works in the eco-sensitive Western Ghats region of Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district. Green activists in Dakshina Kannada have been opposing the project stating that it is aimed at diverting the Nethravathi, the lifeline of the district, to eastern parts of the State.
