Addressing mediapersons here he said that last week he wrote a letter to the Union Water Resources Minister, Uma Bharti, to this effect. He has sought an appointment with the Minister to discuss the issue.

Opposing the project, Mr. Kateel said the State government had proposed it at an estimated cost of Rs. 13,000 crore. However, the government has not made it clear from where it will mobilise the funds.

The project involves civil works in the eco-sensitive Western Ghats region of Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district. Green activists in Dakshina Kannada have been opposing the project stating that it is aimed at diverting the Nethravathi, the lifeline of the district, to eastern parts of the State.
