Koragas pitch for abode on rightful land

Mangalore Today News Network

Padubidri, July 10, 2014: Thirteen Koraga families here at end of their patience,  have built tents on  land which was given  to them first and then allotted  by the KIADB to Suzlon company after promising separate site at Panchakaadu of Nadsaalu village, seven years ago. Submitting a number of memorandums to officials and people’s representatives it seems is in vain.

Now more than 15 members of Koraga community have started their life anew in the houses built using aluminium roofing, at the new spot. Around 10 tents have been erected as of July 8. Speaking to media, a Koraga lady said “We were living at Panchakaadu, but the Suzlon Company acquired land, assuring separate site for us. We are frustrated after running from pillar to post to request people’s representatives and the district administration.  We badly need our own land, we have built our homes at Suzlon site, with the help of donors,” she said.

“We will live here and we won’t leave the place under any circumstances. We want title deeds, electricity, drinking water and toilet facility,” she added.

Meanwhile, Taluk Panchayat Member Bhaskar Padubidri said: “Koragas are tribals and they have every right to live here. They lived for 75 years at Panchakadu and later left it for Suzlon project. Now, it is the responsibility of the district administration to provide facilities to them.

” Padubidri Gram Panchayat President Vijay M Amin said that proper facilities will be provided to them after discussing the issue with the departments concerned and the district administration.

Masters in SW among the Korags : Koraga community woman Srimati is a Master in Social Work (MSW), however she lives in a hut. Though it is two years after completing her Post Graduation, she is yet to get a job. Though she went to Bangalore in search of job, she could not find any job. In Koraga community, very few get higher education. This is a rare case where a woman PG holder is still jobless. The  promises of our Govt. should be made real in all sense of the word.
