Mangalore, June 24, 2014: Discussions were held regarding the demands of the express and shuttle bus operators to increase the bus fares, at a meeting held at the DC office here on June 24, Tuesday under the presidentship of Deputy Commissioner A.B.Ibrahim.
Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner said any hike in fares should neither be a burden to the common man nor should it do injustice to the bus operators. He said the bus operators want the Mangalore-Udupi Express bus fares to be raised to Rs 59. Referring to the court order, he said in that case the fares will have to be hiked to Rs 65 which would be an increase by 20 per cent. At the same time, the DC said increasing the fares by 20 per cent would hit hard the commuters.
Social activist and Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike Convenor Hanumanth Kamath filed objection to a hike in fares of express and shuttle buses.
RTO Afzal Ahmed Khan, SP Dr Sharanappa and other officials, representatives of bus operators and various organisations were present.
