Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 06, 2014:  A Deputy Commissioner has never visited this village after former Deputy Commissioner S K Das, in 1983, he had to return  before reaching it on foot, as the river water rose too high. Banjarumale, is a tribal hamlet of Neriya gram panchayat in Belthangady taluk, about 90 kms away from Mangalore,  most of the people could not believe the happening as it was unexpected too.

DC Ibrahim, the deputy commissioner helpfully listened to the woes of the tribals and villagers, directed the officials to take steps to provide basic facilities needed. The chief demand of the villagers was repairs to the road ( a 10 kms stretch) and restoring the 10 KW mini-hydel power project set up in 2002, its capacity is now  reduced to 5 KW now and  power can be supplied only between 6 pm and 8 am. The deputy commissioner was glad to break the news that a sum of Rs 20 lakh has been earmarked and concreating the road and so on will be done by Independence day this year.

Regarding the repair of mini-hydel power station, the DC asked the people to take technical help from the Mescom. He also suggested  it would be good  to use solar energy.  The DC directed the concerned to take steps to distribute ration (through PDS) in Banjarumale, instead of the villagers going to Neriya to collect ration.

The DC also agreed to provide sewing machines to unemployed in the village through Khadi and Village Industries Board. There are 19 persons who know tailoring, but are jobless. The DC also agreed to fulfil one of their long pending demands of opening an election booth in Banjarumale.  All these years, the villagers had to go to Neriya, which is about 25 kms away.  DC, also directed the officials to rectify the anomalies of ration cards, after verifying the same.

Inauguration :   To mark the great day, the DC inaugurated “DC Katte” which was constructed in 1983 (31 years ago) to welcome the then DC S K Das.  Belthangady Tahsildar Srinivas, Superintendent of Police Sharanappa and heads of various departments among others accompanied the DC.

Red Cross camp :   DK district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) had organised a free health camp at Banjarumale on September 28, 2013.   Though the then DC N Prakash was invited for the same, he could not be present. However, ZP CEO Thulasi Maddineni visited the tribal hamlet on 28.9.13 and noted the woes of the tribals. Such initiatives by the higher authorities are welcomed by common people.
