New Delhi, June 3, 2017:  Two army jawans were killed and four others injured after militants attacked an army convoy in South Kashmir’s Qazigund area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

Officials said the convoy, that was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu, was targeted near Hillar village on the national highway. The attack site is near the Lower Mundah toll post, 100 kilometres from Srinagar.

The injured were shifted to Army’s 92 base hospital where two jawans succumbed to injuries. A hunt is underway to nab the attackers.

Today’s attack comes a day after Army chief General Bipin Rawat along with senior army commanders chaired a high-level meeting at 15 Corps headquarters. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, at a press conference in New Delhi earlier today, said the government would solve the Kashmir problem by taking the people into confidence. He added that the administration has a ‘concrete’ strategy to control the situation.

The army had major success last week when it killed top Hizbul Mujahideen militant Sabzar Bhat, a close associate of slain militant commander Burhan Wani, in an encounter in Tral. However, Bhat’s death triggered protests in the Valley with youth taking to the streets and throwing stones at security personnel.
