Triple Talaq: Rajya Sabha adjourned after ruckus over Centre’s refusal to send Bill to Select

New Delhi, Jan 03, 2018 : There was a massive uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the Opposition that the Bill outlawing instant triple talaq can’t be referred to a select committee.

 

 

The Upper House of Parliament was adjourned until 11 AM tomorrow after a heated debate between the government and Opposition party MPs.

After Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tabled the Bill, Congress leader Anand Sharma moved a notice saying the Bill should be sent to a select panel, and even proposed names for the committee.

Jaitley said that can’t happen, since two judges of the Supreme Court said the practice of instant triple talaq was unfair, and suspended it for six months - a period which ends on February 22.

The Finance Minister said the judges asked parties to come up with appropriate legislation, and that the country expected "urgency" from its Parliament.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal responded saying he wanted to correct the record. What Jaitley said about the Supreme Court’s judgement was said in the context of the minority judgement, Sibal explained.
